Treating Endocrine Disruptors in our Waterways

Advertisement for Sydney Sustainable Engineering Society (SENG – Engineers Australia)

There will be an exciting seminar on the treatment of endocrine disruptors in waste water which is being presented by Dr Stuart Khan, Associate Professor in the School of Civil & Environmental Engineering at the University of New South Wales.

The seminar will be held at Engineers Australia Harricks Auditorium, Ground Floor, 8 Thomas Street, Chatswood, NSW, on the 29th July 2014 (Tuesday) starting  at 6.00pm.

Presentation Description: Endocrine distributors found in waste water have been difficult to treat and as a result have caused abnormalities in the sex hormones of fish and other aquatic organisms. So what treatment methods are available today and how effective are they at reducing this impact on the aquatic environment?

Further information can be obtained from the EA website including the online registration:

Additional Material from WSUD Presentation

The presenters from the recent WSUD afternoon event have provided the following information:

2013 Darcy Lecture

IAH NSW and the Engineers Australia Sydney Division Water Engineering Panel proudly present the 2013 Darcy Lecture, with a presentation by Professor David L. Rudolph, a geological engineer in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at the University of Waterloo.

Professor Rudolph  will be talking on the matter of managing Groundwater Beneath the Agricultural Landscape.

We hope to see you on Wednesday 4th September, 6 to 8 pm at AECOM (Level 21, 420 George Street, Sydney). For more information on the topic and the venue click here.

ARR Workshop: New IFDs and 2D Modelling

The ARR revision team is running a full day workshop on Monday 19th November in Sydney.  The workshop will run from 10am – 4.15pm at UTS, Sydney. An updated schedule is included.

The workshop will now include the launching of the long awaited Two dimensional modelling Best practice and how to guide. The guide has been authored by industry leaders in 2D modelling. The report covers all aspects of 2D modelling including model set up, data and calibration to direct rainfall. The report will be a handy resource for both new and experienced 2D modellers.

The Bureau of Meteorology is nearing completion of the revision of its Intensity-Frequency-Duration (IFD) design rainfall estimates.  The revised IFDs will be available to users via a new webpage which has been design to better meet the requirements of engineers and hydrologists.  At the workshop an update on the revised IFDs will be provided together with a demonstration of the new IFD webpage.  (Detailed presentations on the derivation of the revised IFDs will be made during the conference.) The planned enhancements to the webpage over the next twelve months will also be presented.

The cost of registration is $150 (inc. GST). Registration is open to those attending or not attending the Hydrology and Water Resources Conference. For those attending the Hydrology and Water Resources Conference 19-22nd November – Please note that registration for this event is separate to registering for the conference. Minimal overlap may occur with papers presented at the conference. The exact content of this workshop will not be repeated in other events. Workshops are planned to begin around the country in March next year but will have minimal overlap with this workshop. Morning Tea, Lunch and Afternoon tea and notes is included in the registration price. Please advise at time of booking if you have special dietary requirements. Enquiries should be sent to arr_admin@arr.org.au.

WSRG: Stormwater Harvesting, Reuse and Water Strategy

The Western Sydney Regional Group of EA is running a technical presentation that may be of interest to members of this list. It is titled: Stormwater Harvesting, Reuse and Water Strategy and will be given at the University of Western Sydney (Kingswood Campus), 2pm to 5pm on 30th November 2011. A map of the venue, together with full details, is available in PDF format.

There will be two speakers, namely:

  1. Mr. Geoff Douglas, Project Manager CBD Works Willoughby City Councils
  2. Dr. Bhakti Devi, Manager – Water Strategy, City of Sydney Council

Who will speak on:

(1) Chatswood Integrated Stormwater Management Scheme
Chatswood Integrated Stormwater Management Scheme was developed for a number of reasons including leading the community in water savings, reducing the impact of flooding, to provide a source of non potable water for local businesses, and in providing a possible first step in a council vision for a non-potable ring main around Chatswood. This project has major local and global significance in proving that significant potable water savings can be made by using available stormwater for office building and other business needs.

(2) City of Sydney Water Strategy
City of Sydney is currently developing a water strategy which is comprehensive in scope and scale. The strategy is therefore called Decentralised Water Master Plan. The master plan aims to identify all opportunities that exist within City of Sydney council area for improving water efficiency, improving stormwater quality and increasing the use of recycled water. Dr Devi’s presentation will provide the context and an overview of the master plan. It will also cover the baseline mapping which forms its foundation and the opportunities that can be seen emerging from it.

Severn River Tidal Barrage Talk

Following the recent IAHR Biennial Congress in Brisbane we have managed to secure the incoming IAHR President, Professor Roger Falconer, to present a lecture on his work on the Severn River Tidal Barrage. Professor Falconer is the Halcrow Professor of Water Management and Director Hydro- environmental Research Centre, School of Engineering, Cardiff University.

The presentation is at UTS Broadway, Room CB01.04.06 and is scheduled for 5:30 for a 6pm start on the 12th July 2011. Refreshments and alcoholic beverages will be available for the event.

SSEE: Invitation to Field Tour of Rouse Hill – Australia’s Largest Community Water Recycling Scheme

The Sydney Society of Sustainable and Environmental Engineering extends an invitation to join us for a field tour of Rouse Hill, Australia’s largest community water recycling scheme.

Over 19,000 homes use 1.7 billion litres of recycled water each year for flushing toilets, watering gardens, washing cars and other outdoor uses.

On average the Rouse Hill scheme has reduced demand for drinking water by about 40%. Eventually the scheme will serve 36,000 homes.

The area includes parts of Acacia Gardens, Beaumont Hills, Castle Hill, Glenwood, Kellyville, Kellyville Ridge, Parklea, Quakers Hill, Stanhope Gardens, The Ponds and, of course, Rouse Hill.

The Rouse Hill Water Recycling Plant treats about 4.7 billion litres of wastewater each year for residential use.

A PDF Invitation is available.

Date: Thursday, 7 April 2011
Time: 5:00pm for networking. 5:30 – 7.30pm for tour
Venue: Rouse Hill Town. Details to be sent to attendees.
Cost: Free, but you must RSVP.
RSVP: Register by Thursday 24 March 2011 to Sydneyssee@engineersaustralia.org.au. Please include your name, contact number, and email in the RSVP.
